On Line Academy (Gr. 4-12)
The On Line Academy is an accredited program providing a complete curriculum for grades 4-12, and is recognized by the Colorado Department of Education as a public school entity. OLA is fully accredited by the Monte Vista School District through the Colorado Department of Education. We have a fully qualified and talented staff of Colorado certified teachers delivering standards based courses using the Internet as the primary delivery system.
We are finishing our 12th year of meeting the individual needs of students whose particular situations preclude the traditional public school setting. Students enroll in a robust and challenging instructional program, which accommodates individual student needs while providing a quality education. A significant proportion of students completing their high school educational program through the On Line Academy continue their formal education through college attendance, and OLA transcripts are no different than other Colorado school transcripts for college admissions purposes.
Why Choose OLA?
The world of on line instruction is rapidly growing and many schools and commercial entities are delving into the environment. The future of public education will be enhanced greatly by this approach, with more choices, options and expanded accommodations for students being provided.
We have been doing this for nearly a decade; we were the pioneers, the first to provide online instruction in Colorado and one of a handful in the country to explore the educational capabilities that the Internet and computer technologies have for distance learning and alternative students. What we offer is a proven ability to deliver a quality, robust instructional program that accommodates student's individual needs as much as possible. Students in the On Line Academy can progress through their courses at a pace that works best for them; all courses are available to the student at all times. They are not constrained by a schedule imposed from the school. If a student needs more time to learn something, we allow the time they need. If a student can progress quickly we don't restrict them.
In addition to that flexibility, we use outstanding upper level students from Monte Vista High School as Peer Tutors. They are selected and trained to support the learning of our OLA students. Each student is also assigned an advisor from our staff that helps the student and monitors the student's progress. We do offer loaner computers to qualifying families and provide compensation for Internet expenses.
Our instructional program is not a canned commercial product. We developed and continue to refine our curriculum, based on many years of alternative school experience and instructional technology knowledge. Our staff members are not given on line courses as an add-on to their normal classroom course-load. We have brought together a group of highly motivated, creative and dedicated teachers who are committed to these students and this educational environment. We are here to meet the needs of kids who for whatever reason, are unable to succeed in the traditional school environment. Our mission is to see that these students have the same opportunity to learn and grow. And we're pretty good at it I think.
